I didn't care for the story, and it's not something I would likely read to a child. I also didn't like that the story actually did have dragons in it only because I feel like a child might be upset that they were mislead. Cece Barton is a widowed mom with a daughter in college. After moving to wine country to live nearby her sister, Cece becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a man. Wanting to clear her name, Cece starts investigating the murder. Will she clear her name?

Thank you, NetGalley, for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of Murder Uncorked (Cece Barton Mystery, #1) by Maddie Day. I received a digital copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

I knew a little about this cozy mystery because the author wrote a prequel that was published in a collection of novellas, and I wasn't disappointed. This story was a fun, easy read and perfect to read while on vacation. I liked that it took place near vineyards and that the reader gets a little insight of how they might promote their products.

Most of the characters were likable, and I felt like I could be friends with several of them. The culprit was a bit obvious, but there were a couple of red herrings that made me second guess myself. I look forward to reading more of this series by Maddie Day. Four out of five stars is what I gave Murder Uncorked (Cece Barton Mystery, #1) by Maddie Day.

It opens with Scarlett Gardner having a hard day at work because everything has gone wrong. She partly blames Connor, her ex-boyfriend, because he dumped her and took off to greener pastures for a start up company when they were supposed to be running the bookstore she opened together. Taking a walk on the nearby beach, Scarlett stumbles over a dead body, which turns out to be that of Lorelei Knight . . . the last customer who frequented her store the night before. Now, Scarlett is the prime suspect and needs to clear her name.

First and foremost, I'd like to thank NetGalley for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of Murder by the Seashore (California Bookshop Mystery, #1) by Samara Yew. When I read the synopsis of this book, it sounded like it was right up my alley. I received a copy of this cozy mystery for free in exchange for my honest review.

The beginning of the story started off a bit slow, but it quickly picked up pace. I found myself falling in love with most of the characters . . . and the storyline, of course. The few characters I didn't care for were Connor, Detective Maxwell, Autumn, and Martin. However, Martin did redeem himself a bit later in the book. You'll have to read the book to find out how!

There were plenty of twists and red herrings. My first suspect was Evelyn Maxwell, who happened to be married to Police Detective Maxwell and work for Scarlett. She acted very strange in my opinion. Other people I suspected were Connor, Autumn, and Lucia. I was glad to see that the person I finally decided upon as the culprit was in fact the murderer. However, I never did figure out the connection between Lorelei and Scarlett.

I enjoyed this cozy mystery quite a bit because it's well written and held my attention. I can't wait to find out what happens next in this series. Four out of five stars is what I gave Murder by the Seashore (California Bookshop Mystery, #1) by Samara Yew.

The novel is about a kid named Richard Elauved who has been sent to live with foster parents in Ballantyne after his biological parents were killed. Richard is an outcast and bully at his new school and becomes a suspect when a classmate named Tom goes missing. He tries to explain that Tom was sucked through a phone booth on the edge of the woods, but no one believes him. Please note that my review does contain spoilers.

Part one of The Night House seemed a little young as if it was targeting middle readers between the ages of eight and twelve. When Tom is sucked through the telephone and another character was turned into an insect, it seemed like it was something that would appear in a Goosebumps book by R.L. Stine. Then, the main character, Richard Elauved, was searching for a mysterious person that used to live in Ballantyne, which made me think of the book called The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Part one concludes with Richard trying to kill a "soul" by setting it on fire, which is reminiscent of the Netflix show Stranger Things.

Part two opens up fifteen years later with Richard Elauved attending his high school reunion. This section seemed much more mature than part one, and it very much felt like It by Stephen King. There were plenty twists and turns through out this section that kept me guessing, and nothing was as it seemed. When this section concluded, it had elements like Desperation by Stephen King. At this point, I was very leery about the book because it felt like the author was sampling ideas from others.

Part three threw me for a loop. Like the previous section of the book, it was more mature than part one. It took me a moment to figure what was actually happening, and I was very disappointed because it was very much like the movie Shutter Island, which is based off the book of the same name by Dennis Lehane. I never read the book but did see the movie because it starred Leonardo DiCaprio.

Overall, I was disappointed in The Night House by Jo Nesbo because it didn't seem very original, and I hated the way the story ended. It did however keep me interested enough to read the entire novel to see what would happen. Three out of five stars.

The typical chaos ensues when Stephanie has to bring Bob along to apprehend all of her FTAs and has her asking herself if she wants to be married.

Each book in this series typically follows the same formula and is wrapped up in a neat, tidy bow at the end. It's because of this that I enjoy the series . . . I always know that Stephanie is going to get herself into some sort of trouble and need Ranger or Morelli to help her, and the bad guy is always caught. Sometimes, I just need something familiar and predictable to read. And, I don't mean that in a bad way either because it allows me to escape reality and gives me a few chuckles along the way. It's like the comfort food of books for me.

The last few books I felt like someone had ghost written them, but this one seems more in line with the earlier stories in the series, so I didn't get that feeling with this edition. Unlike the ending of the other installments, it also left readers with a bit of a cliffhanger . . . Stephanie has marriage proposals from Morelli and Ranger! She had been engaged to Morelli earlier in the series and called it off, so I am intrigued if she will actually choose one of them and get married. I really hope so.

One of my favorite characters is Bob, and I love the fact that he had a huge role in Dirty Thirty. What can I say? I'm an animal lover, and this dog is just ever so lovable. I also really enjoyed Ranger in this storyline.

Five out of five stars is what I gave Dirty Thirty (Stephanie Plum, #30) by Janet Evanovich. I'm kind of sad that I finished the story because I want more, and now, I have to wait another year or so for the next installment to come out.

Which school will win?

A huge thank you goes out to NetGalley for giving me an Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of Secret Spells (Diary of an Accidental Witch, #4) by Perdita Cargill and Honor Cargill and Illustrated by Katie Saunders for free in exchange for my honest review. I was intrigued by the book title and cover art and was thrilled to be approved to read this book.

This book is somewhat similar to The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy. The main character goes to a school for witches where there are some mishaps while casting some spells. Those are really the only similarities between the two books.

I liked the way the story was told in a diary entry format as I feel like this makes it easier for the target audience of six to nine year olds to read and process the storyline. It could be read as a stand alone book, but I would recommend reading the series in order just so you have the entire backstory up front.

Despite Secret Spells being a fantasy novel for children, I felt like how the characters reacted to different situations was quite believable. With that being said, the reader doesn't really get an in depth look at the characters, but I guess that's to be expected in a book for young readers. Four out of five stars.

But soon after, Nora's patients are turning up dead, and it appears to be a copycat killing. Who knows her secret?

A huge thank you goes out to NetGalley for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of The Locked Door by Frieda McFadden. McFadden had become one of my favorite authors, so when my request to read this book was approved, I was absolutely ecstatic. I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

Wow! This book kept me on the edge of my seat, and I couldn't wait to figure out who was the copycat killer. I had it narrowed down to two different people, and it ended up not being either of the people I thought it might be. When the killer was revealed, I was absolutely shocked!

The main character, Nora Davis, was a bit hard to like, even though I know she was messed up from her childhood. I liked her well enough, but one of my favorite characters ended up being the stray, black cat. I was worried that the cat would be killed, and I am so glad that it survived. I am a huge animal lover, especially when it comes to cats, so any kind of animal cruelty in books (and movies) really upsets me.

I absolutely loved The Locked Door despite it reminding me a bit of Rachel Caine's Stillhouse Lake. There really isn't anything I can complain about in this book. Five out of five stars is what I gave The Locked Door by Frieda McFadden.

I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was excited to be approved to read this book!

DEATH OF A CHRISTMAS MITTEN KNITTER (HAYLEY POWELL FOOD AND COCKTAILS MYSTERY, #16.5) by LEE HOLLIS

This particular novella was a fun read, and I enjoyed reading about Haley Powell and her friends trying to solve the latest mystery, which had me guessing. It's always great to revisit characters that are so likable. I haven't read a lot of books in this series, but overall, I have come to enjoy the storylines a lot, and this novella did not disappoint. It's becoming one of my favorite cozy mystery series, and I need to find more time to read more by this author. Four out of five stars.

TWO CHRISTMAS MITTENS (KITCHEN WITCH MYSTERIES, #4.5) by LYNN CAHOON

I haven't read any of the books in this particular series, so it took a while for me to really figure out who some of the characters were and how they were connected to the other characters in the story. There really wasn't much backstory either, which was a bit confusing as well. The overall story ended up being great once I figured out how the characters were related to one another. Additionally, it was a little predictable. I enjoyed it enough that I would like to read the first book in the series to give the series a fair chance. Three out of five stars.

MURDEROUS MITTENS (CEECEE BARTON MYSTERY, #0.5) by MADDIE DAY

This novella is a prequel to a new series that brought in a guest character from another series by the same author. The storyline was interesting enough and had plenty of red herrings. With that being said, the ending felt a little rushed, and the motive a little unrealistic. That aside, I am looking forward to reading the first book in the series because this novella was fun and entertaining. Four out of five stars.

Overall, Christmas Mittens Murder by Lee Hollis, Lynn Cahoon, and Maddie Day was a fun, entertaining read that put me in the mood for Christmas. Four out of five stars is what I give this book.

When Wrecker comes across a speedboat stuck on a sand flat, the men onboard pay him to keep silent about what he saw. He's happy to oblige, but then, Wrecker keeps seeing the men all over Key West, and now, they want more than his silence.

A huge thank you goes out to NetGalley for the Advanced Readers Copy of Wrecker by Carl Hiaasen. Having heard a lot of good things about this author, I was thrilled to be approved to receive a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review and was not disappointed in the least.

Although this book written for middle grade children, it seems more mature for lack of a better word. I would have thought the target audience was young adults. Don't get me wrong, there isn't anything that isn't appropriate for kids, it just seemed to be written for older kids. It was extremely well written, and I enjoyed it as an adult.

The storyline was fantastic and mostly believable. I loved the fact that Hiaasen used COVID-19 as one of the major themes in the story. So many authors haven't written about it for whatever reason, and I am glad that some of what the world went through is captured in Wrecked for all eternity. Hopefully, it will give generations down the road a glimpse of what life was like during the pandemic.

I really enjoyed the main character and his stepsister. They were written very believably. And, although I didn't care for Wrecker's mother, father, and stepfather, I felt like they were written realistically as well. The setting was Key West, which I have been able to visit twice before, so I enjoyed the fact that I could picture some of the island and more touristy attractions. I definitely want to go back there to visit and spend more time there.

Four out of five stars is what I gave Wrecked by Carl Hiaasen. The only reason I didn't give it a five was that some of the story was a little slow. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Chaos breaks out when the turkey has been kidnapped and Nick's cousin has been murdered.

I'd like to thank NetGalley for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of Mrs. Claus and the Trouble with Turkeys (Mrs. Claus, #4) by Liz Ireland. When my request to read this book was approved, I was happy to receive this novel for free in exchange for my honest review.

My first foray into this series was a novella that was a part of collected works, and I thought the story was just okay, so I was happy to see that the series does get better. It still is a cozy mystery and a bit young for my taste, but it was a lot more interesting. This is a series that I'll likely stay with as most of the characters are relatable. I am happy to say that I didn't see the ending coming despite the author dropping lots of clues . . . I should've figured out part of what was going to happen.

Four out of five stars is what I gave Mrs. Claus and the Trouble with Turkeys (Mrs. Claus, #4) by Liz Ireland. It's a super cute book that is a definite must read in October or November to put yourself in the mood for Thanksgiving. I look forward to seeing what kind of shenanigans happen in the next installment.

Ellie's father teaches her about how she is like an avocado pit and how slowly it seems to grow but how patience is a virtue.

A big thank you goes out to NetGalley for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of Avocado Magic by Taltal Levi. I'm always looking for great children's books to recommend to friends and family with little ones, so I was excited to read this book and will definitely be recommending it.

I love that Avocado Magic by Taltal Levi helps kids understand that all things come in time with a little patience. Another thing that I liked about the story is it shows a family that has its own traditions like having birthdays under their avocado tree . . . a tradition that is shown to continue when the child starts their own family.

Five out of five stars is what I gave Avocado Magic by Taltal Levi. Even though I am an adult, I enjoyed this picture book, and I know I would have absolutely loved it as a little kid. This is a definite read for kids between the ages of three and five.

Witches Get Stuff Done (Starfall Point, #1) by Molly Harper opens with Riley arriving to Starfall Point, an island in Michigan, to meet her last living relative on her mother's side only to find out her Aunt passed away. Inheriting the family mansion, she learns she's a witch and has been entrusted with the family secret.

I'd like to thank NetGalley for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of Witches Get Stuff Done (Starfall Point, #1) by Molly Harper. I was intrigued by the title of this novel and was thrilled to be approved to read this book. I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review.

When I first started reading this book, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not. The first few chapters were way too long in my opinion, and I felt like something could've been done better to ease the reader into the story. With that being said, I am glad I stuck with the story as it picked up, and I ended up falling in love with the characters and the atmosphere of the island.

The author ended the book with a huge cliffhanger, and I really hope that none of the characters that I've come to love are the "bad guy". I halfway wonder if it will end up being Riley's father or one of Edison's parents because these are really the only characters I don't care for.

I'd consider Witches Get Stuff Done (Starfall Point, #1) by Molly Harper a combination of romance and mystery with paranormal elements. I can't wait until the next book comes out. Four out of five stars.

The annual holiday is Liz's choice this year, and hiking a huge mountain in Norway is what was chosen. Obstacles throughout the trip reveal secrets, leading to the death of one of them. Who will survive?

I'd like to thank NetGalley for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of The Hike by Lucy Clarke. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors, so when I was approved to read Clarke's latest novel, I was over the moon with glee. I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

From the start, The Hike is extremely engaging, and I had trouble pulling myself away to do normal every day things. When I wasn't reading it, I found myself thinking about the story and the characters.

As a whole, the four main characters were likable but definitely had some traits about them that weren't amiable, just like real life. I liked the character of Helena the best as I identified with her more than the other characters. As for the secondary characters, the ones I liked in the beginning, I ended up not liking much, and the one I didn't like, or trust, ended up being an awesome character.

Five out of five stars is what I gave The Hike by Lucy Clarke. I can't wait to see what else Lucy Clarke writes . . . she is that talented. Perry, and Liz Ireland" width="259" />

Halloween Cupcake Murder (Irish Village Mystery, #9.5) by Carlene O'Connor, Carol J. Perry, and Liz Ireland is a collection of three novellas by three different authors, all having to do with Halloween. I'd like to thank NetGalley for the Advanced Readers Copy of this collection that I received for free in exchange for my honest review.

The first novella in this collection is part of a series and is named Halloween Cupcake Murder (Irish Village Mystery, #9.5) written by Carlene O'Connor. Tara Meehan owns an architectural salvage yard and in search of new products for her store. When she receives a cupcake and a cryptic message from a stranger, Tara becomes entwined with an ancient mystery tied to Samhain. I found this story to be intriguing but a little hard to follow at times, but all in all, I really enjoyed this novella. It was suspenseful without being scary, and I loved that their was a secret society involved. It made me want to re-watch the movie The Skulls. Four out of five stars.

The second novella is also part of a series and is entitled Mrs. Claus and the Candy Corn Caper written by Liz Ireland. Mrs. Claus has introduced the holiday of Halloween to Christmastown, and the locals are planning a huge celebration that includes a candy corn themed bake off. When an employee is found dead at the newest bakery in town, Mrs. Claus is determined to save the holiday by find out who would be so awful to kill. I loved the concept of this novella because I love both Halloween and Christmas, but the story seemed to be targeted more towards tweens and teens instead of adults. For that reason, I had a hard time connecting with this tale. However, I am will to read other stories written by this author. Three out of five stars.

The third novella is called A Triple Layer Halloween Murder written by Carol J. Perry and is part of a series as well. The town of Salem, Massachusetts is amping up for its month long celebration of Halloween, and Lee Barrett is looking forward to covering all the festivities for the local news station. However, when a local bakery owner goes missing, and Lee's security system captures the bakery owner catching a ride in front of her house, she knows she has to help solve this mystery. This story was somewhat predictable, but I absolutely loved the fact it took place in Salem, which is one of my favorite places to visit. The author did a fantastic job of keeping me engaged in the plot and wanting to know what happened next. I definitely want to read more books in this series. Four out of five stars.

Kuang" width="247" />

Yellowface by R.F. Kuang is about Yale classmates and friends, June Haywood and Athena Liu, debuting their novels at the same time with both expecting to become well known authors. When Athena suddenly dies in front of her friend, June makes a rash decision and steals Athena's manuscript, pawning it off as her own in hopes of attaining some of the fame Athena found. Will June be caught?

This novel was the October selection for the book club I belong to. Although the synopsis sounded intriguing, I was afraid I was going to be dissatisfied with the direction that the story would take. My assumption was correct.

June ended up being as unlikable as I thought she would be and literally had no redeeming qualities. She kept making excuses and trying to rationalize the reason for stealing Athena's manuscript and publishing it as her own. I kept waiting for her to get caught or reveal what she had done, but neither one really happened, which just made my blood boil.

The ending made me almost as angry as the ending of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Since I read Yellowface on my ereader, I refrained from throwing it across the room like I did with Gillian Flynn's book, which was a paperback. With that being said, R.F. Kuang has a way with words that kept me wanting to read until the very end. It was engaging and entertaining while bringing up very real things like racism and plagiarism. Five out of five stars.

When one of the members dies under suspicious circumstances, Rain and best friend Julia take it on themselves to become amateur sleuths to find out what happens.

I'd like to thank NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of Read To Death At The Lakeside Library (Lakeside Library Mystery, #3) by Holly Danvers. Being a huge Agatha Christie fan, I knew I wanted to read Holly Danvers' latest book since the storyline revolved around one of Christie's novels. When I was approved to receive a copy for free in exchange for my honest review, I was happy.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading Read To Death At The Lakeside Library. It was a super cute and fun read . . . a beach read if you will. The only thing I didn't care for, and it was a minor thing, is when Julia would substitute cute sayings like fiddlesticks instead of the actual curse word.

From the beginning, Holly Danvers gives us lots of clues as to who the murderer was going to be as well as giving the reader a couple of red herrings, but I kept thinking she was doing that to throw us off. For whatever reason, I kept thinking that Marge was somehow going to be the murderer, but I read too much into it and was wrong.

I really enjoyed the characters of Rain and Julia and wanted to be a part of their friend group!! Nick and Jace were really great characters as well. For the most part, all the characters were likable, which is a bit refreshing as I'm getting tired of books that only have unlikable characters.

Five out of five stars is what I gave Read To Death At The Lakeside Library (Lakeside Library Mystery, #3) by Holly Danvers. I can definitely say I will be reading other books in this series and can't wait to see what other mischief Rain and Julia get themselves into.

Things almost immediately go awry when Edwin is stung by stingrays and Jane finds a dead body.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of Murder In The Book Lover's Loft (Book Retreat Mysteries, #9) by Ellery Adams. The cover of this cozy mystery was super cute and the synopsis intriguing. When I got the notification that I was approved to read this book for free in exchange for my honest review, I was excited.

This book was an easy read as well as super cute and fun. It reminded me a bit of a Nancy Drew book. Although Murder In The Book Lover's Loft was a bit predictable at times, it was thoroughly enjoyable. I really enjoyed the characters of Jane, Edwin, and Olivia. I even
liked Mr. Butterworth . . . he reminded me of the butler in the 1998
version of The Parent Trap. There were plenty of suspects throughout the story and plenty of clues pointing to the murderer. However, I couldn't quite figure out who it was because so many of the people had such good motives.

I look forward to reading all the preceding books in the Book Retreat Mystery series and all that come after this installment. Five out of five stars is what I gave Murder In The Book Lover's Loft (Book Retreat Mysteries, #9) by Ellery Adams.

The story opens with Poppy McAllister not being happy about being coerced into the Cape May Haunted Dinners Tour during the Halloween season. Feeling a bit overwhelmed about breaking up an argument between some of her guests, Poppy is dismayed when one of them turns up dead.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the Advanced Readers Copy of Mischief Nights Are Murder (A Poppy McAllister Mystery, #8) by Libby Klein. I love a great mystery, especially as it gets closer to Halloween, so when my request to read this book was approved, I was thrilled.

This was the first book I've read by Libby Klein, and it was a well written story that kept my attention. Although, it's the eighth book in a series, it could be read as a stand alone. The author did a relatively good job of giving the reader some backstory of each of the characters, so I didn't really feel like I missed out on anything. With that being said, I personally like reading books in a series in order.

Most of the characters were likable and relatable. Of course, there were a handful that weren't likable, but I would deem one of the obnoxious characters as one that you love to hate . . . under all the gruffness and nastiness of the character, she ended up being not quite so unpleasant. One of my absolute favorite characters was the cat named Fig. He just absolutely stole the show for me. There were an abundance of characters in Mischief Nights Are Murder, and at times, I found myself having trouble keeping up with who was who. Because of this, it took just a little of the enjoyment out of the story.

There were plenty of red herrings in the novel, and I kept changing my mind as to who committed the murder. I never figured out who did it and was shocked at who it turned out to be. Even though the culprit is revealed, there is a huge cliffhanger at the end of the story. This doesn't bother me in the least since I enjoyed the book and plan on reading all the other books in the series.

Four out of five stars is what I give Mischief Nights Are Murder (A Poppy McAllister Mystery, #8) by Libby Klein. This is the perfect book to put you in the mood for Halloween without it being scary or horrifying. For those of you who don't like a lot of swearing, you'll be glad to know that there isn't any in it.

Determined to keep this from happening again, Lindsey has the seniors from the local high school over for a pumpkin carving contest. On top of that, one of her employees told a reality show that they could film the lighthouse for their show. During the taping, the ghost makes his presence known, and everyone flees the building only to find that one of the high school teachers hanging from a tree. Lindsey and her friends are determined to find the answer.

I'd like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of Murder at the Pumpkin Pageant (Beacon Bakeshop, #4) written by Darci Hannah. I wasn't familiar with this author or her books, but after reading the synopsis, I knew I had to read this book. I was delighted when I found out I received a copy for free in exchange for my honest review.

At first, I didn't realize that this cozy mystery was the fourth book in a series until I started reading it. However, this book could really be read as a stand alone book as the author does a relatively good job at bringing the reader up to speed on the characters. I will say that I did have trouble keeping some of those characters straight in my mind, but the majority of them were likable.

The author did a phenomenal job with the twists and turns along with having plenty of suspects. There were three different people that I suspected, but one of them I had a gut feeling about being the actual murderer in the story. I just wasn't entirely sure of this person's connection to the victim, so that is why I suspected a couple of other people as well . . . they had more of a connection to the victim. The author definitely kept me second guessing myself!

I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, and it put me in the mood for Halloween. A few of the recipes sounded yummy, so I will give those recipes a try this fall. At some point, I will read the other books in the Beacon Bakeshop series. Four out of five stars is what I gave Murder at the Pumpkin Pageant (Beacon Bakeshop, #4) written by Darci Hannah.

Several years ago, I read the first book in this series, Death of a Kitchen Diva (Hayley Powell Food and Cocktails Mystery, #1) and enjoyed it. When I saw that the author had a new book in the series, I knew I wanted to revisit the series. I was super happy that I was approved to receive this book for free in exchange for my honest review. There were so many suspects and red herrings that I never figured out who the culprit was. In fact, I felt like it came a little out of left field. Hayley and her husband are extremely likable as are her brother and his husband. There were times that I didn't like the best friend of Hayley and times that I did. Upon arriving at her new house, she notices the condemned house next door and decides to restore it to it's previous splendor. Little does she know that it's haunted.

I'd like to thank NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's Books for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of The International House of Dereliction by Jacqueline Davies. Upon seeing the cover and reading the synopsis of this kid's book, my interest was piqued. When I was approved to receive a copy for free in exchange for my honest review, I was delighted.

At first, I found this book to be a bit slow, and it reminded me ever so slightly of Leeva At Last by Sara Pennypacker because both of the main characters were kept home from school by their parents and were approximately the same age. Both of the main characters also got their education by learning on their own. However, that is where the similarities end. As I progressed through the storyline, it really picked up and became more interesting. I could even see this book being turned into a movie for kids. The characters were . . . well . . . quite quirky and endearing.

This ghost story was quite charming and not too scary. It's perfect for children between the ages of eight and twelve. I loved the lessons throughout the story, especially the one about remembering where you come from. Five out of five stars is what I give The International House of Dereliction by Jacqueline Davies.

It opens with sixty-year old Jane Hunter starting a new job for Cameron "Cam" Clewe after being forced to retire from her librarian career. When Jane finds a dead body on her first day of the job, Cam requests his employee to help exonerate his name.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the Advanced Readers Copy of A Cryptic Clue (Hunter and Clewe, #1) by Victoria Gilbert. I loved the cover and synopsis of the book and was thrilled when I learned that I was receiving a free copy of it in exchange for my honest review.

At first, I had trouble getting into the story, so I put the book aside and came back to it. Being in a different mindset definitely made the difference. I ended up enjoying the storyline. I really liked the main character, Jane Hunter. I wasn't as crazy about Cameron Clewe, but he ended up growing on me.

There were lots of suspects, and I wasn't sure who the killer was going to be. In fact, I didn't figure out who it was, and when the identity was revealed, I felt like it came out of left field. Additionally, there were a couple of underlying mysteries involving people's identities. However, those identities were never revealed, and it really bothered me that the author didn't wrap those two storylines up. Since it appears that there will be at least a sequel, I'm hoping that we find out who these two people are.

All in all, I enjoyed A Cryptic Clue (Hunter and Clewe, #1) by Victoria Gilbert for the most part. Four out of five stars is what I gave this book.
