Book Review: The Last Carolina Summer by Karen White

The Last Carolina Summer by Karen White is the story about Phoebe Manigault returning home to Mt. Pleasant, a suburb of Charleston, South Carolina, to help her sister with their ailing mother. When past memories resurface, Phoebe is thrown back into some childhood turmoil. I requested an Advanced Readers Copy ARC of The Last Carolina Summer from NetGalley, and I was ecstatic when the provided me with a copy for free in exchange for my honest review. So, a big thank you goes out to them! When I began reading this story, I just happened to be vacationing in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. I loved hearing about the different places, including streets and a bridge called the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, which I had to cross to get into Mt. Pleasant as well as Isle of Palms. It's always nice to be able to visualize the places and author writes about. With that being said, I'm not a fan of traveling over bridges, and one of the scenes of The Last Carolina Summer mentions a car going off ...

Book Review: Miss Nelson is Missing (Miss Nelson, #1) by Harry Allard

First published in 1977, Miss Nelson is Missing (Miss Nelson, #1) by Harry Allard is a fun, offbeat story about the students in Room 207 misbehaving once again. It's the worst class in the entire school, and the teacher just never shows up one day and instead get a new teacher named Miss Viola Swamp.

While online shopping for books, I came across a book that was a blast from my past . . . Miss Nelson is Missing. I absolutely LOVED this book as a child, and I loved the short movie that was made out of it, which one of my elementary teachers let my class watch one day. I don't know of one kid from my generation that didn't love this book. 

When I purchased this book for nostalgic reasons and of course to reread, I found out that there were other books featuring "Miss Nelson" that I never knew about. I definitely will go back and read those books as well. I was super interested to see if Miss Nelson is Missing stood the test of time, and I have to say it did not disappoint. I enjoyed reading it just as much as I did when I was a little kid. I do remember wondering what kind of kids would be able to get away with acting the way they did because my parents and teachers would not tolerate behavior like that.

Miss Viola SwampIt does make me wonder if this book is still in school and public libraries and if it is still popular with kids today. What I do find interesting is that according to Amazon.com, it is recommended for children between the ages of four and seven, but I remember it being popular for kids between the ages of six and nine, especially the short movie. (I would love to own a dvd of the movie as well, but I can't find a copy.)

Miss Nelson is Missing is an engaging book for kids and parents alike, and I hope it is still popular with children today. It definitely has stood the test of time. I gave it five out of five stars.

Side Note:  If you have a young child that isn't showing any interest in reading, I urge you to have him or her give this book a go as I think it will be just the book to pique their interest.

Book Review: Dirty Thirty (Stephanie Plum, #30) by Janet Evanovich Dirty Thirty (Stephanie Plum, #30) by Janet Evanovich  is the latest installment in the Stephanie Plum book series and opens with Joe Morelli asking Stephanie to dog sit his dog Bob while he is out of town testifying at a trial.  The typical chaos ensues when Stephanie has to bring Bob along to apprehend all of her FTAs and has her asking herself if she wants to be married. Each book in this series typically follows the same formula and is wrapped up in a neat, tidy bow at the end.  It's because of this that I enjoy the series . . . The Business Trip by Jessie Garcia is about two women from Madison who are completely different from one another and are on an airplane bound for Denver, Colorado. Jasmine is a waitress and is escaping an abusive relationship. Stephanie is a news director for a local news station headed to a news conference. Friends and family of both women receive texts that they've met a man named Trent. Then, both women disappear. Panic starts to set in with loved ones. Who is Trent, and what has he done to them?
