Book Review: The Spellmans Strike Again (The Spellmans, #4) by Lisa Lutz

Image
Recently, I decided to reread The Spellmans Strike Again (The Spellmans, #4) by Lisa Lutz, and it was just as good as I remembered it to be.  Part mystery, part humor, it sucked me in from the get go.  This particular book series is so unlike any other books I've read that I've often wondered how Lisa Lutz came up with the idea for the series.  One day I'll eventually see if I can find out the answer to my musings.   The character development and imagery is so well done that as I read The Spellmans Strike Again , it was like watching a movie in my mind.  I would love for the series to be developed into a movie or television show, but as far as I know, there is no plan for that happening.  I've come to love every character in the series . . . okay, maybe not Harkey, but you get the picture.  They are so endearing, even the ones that have annoying personalities. There isn't one bad thing I can say about this book or any of the others in the series....

Book Review: The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick

Image
Several years ago when the movie trailer for  The Silver Linings Playbook came out, I knew I had to see the movie because it starred the actor Bradley Cooper. Be still my heart! But I knew that it was based on a book, and I am big on reading the book before seeing the movie, so I immediately ran out to Barnes and Noble Booksellers to buy the book without reading the synopsis like I typically do. This Matthew Quick novel was interesting to say the least, and it definitely wasn't what I was expecting. The writing and story of The Silver Linings Playbook was definitely reminiscent of Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being A Wallflower . The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick was very well written, but the main two characters of the book, Pat and Tiffany, really began to grate on my nerves as I progressed through the book. However, I'm not sure if that was Quick's intention or not. I think part of the reason why the character Pat grated on my nerves is alth...

Book Review: The Grownup by Gillian Flynn

Image
When The Grownup by Gillian Flynn came out in print, I was super excited about the book. Little did I know that it was actually a short story. Then, life got in the way, and I forgot about the book. I finally ordered the book (short story) from ThriftBooks.com and finished reading it in the wee hours of today. I wasn't entirely sure what the synopsis was when I first began reading it, but it was super intriguing. The Grownup is about a woman who works at a store with psychics. At least, that is what is promoted in the storefront. In the back of the store, there are sex workers who work their way to the front of the store to be an actual "psychic". When a customer named Susan Burke comes in for an aura reading because she thinks her renovated Victorian home is haunted and her stepson is becoming possessed by the house, the psychic comes up with a way to con the woman out of $2,000. This story was not very satisfying when it was all done. None of the loose e...

Book Review: Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (Scary Stories, #1) by Alvin Schwartz

Image
With the movie Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark coming to movie theaters in August 2019, I had to reread the book of the same name. I loved the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark trilogy when I was in middle school and remember them being very creepy. Although I don't think I ever got rid of my copies from my childhood, I didn't know where they are, so I ordered the entire trilogy with the original artwork from Amazon.com. When the books were delivered to my house yesterday, I was excited to dive right in to the first book because the sight of the books brought back all the feels from my childhood. However, in the hour it took me to read the first book, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark , I was very disappointed because it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered it to be. Although, the pictures were just as wonderful as they always were . . . and super creepy. The stories that were still creepy that I enjoyed were Room For One More , The Hook , The Babysitter , ...
