Book Review: Everyone Here Is Lying by Shari Lapena

Image
Everyone Here Is Lying by Shari Lapena was published on July 25, 2023.  The story opens with William Wooler having an affair.  When his mistress ends things, William goes home early wanting some peace and quiet only to find his daughter Avery home from school early.  He loses his temper with his daughter and leaves.  Hours later, Avery is missing and presumed dead, leaving William as the suspect.  However, he isn't the only person in town hiding a secret. Shari Lapena is one of my favorite authors, so whenever she has a new book out, I know that I'm going to read it automatically.  I was hoping that I'd be lucky enough to receive an advanced readers copy from NetGalley.  Unfortunately, it wasn't in the cards for me.  However, I was one of the first people to be able to check out Everyone Here Is Lying from my local public library. Told from multiple perspectives, the story held my attention, and I drew some conclusions on who I thought was invol...

Book Review: Sick Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg

Image
Sick Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg opens with teacher Mrs. Hartwell calling in sick to school.  When the substitute teacher doesn't show up, the other faculty and staff members fill in and chaos ensues.  Told from alternating perspectives, we see what several of the students think as well as what Mrs. Hartwell does on her sick day. A big thank you to NetGalley and Charlesbridge for the digital Advanced Readers Copy of Sick Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg.  I was excited that my request to review this book was approved.  I received a copy for free in exchange for my honest review. When I requested this book, I wasn't aware that it's part of a book series.  This children's book was exceptionally well written, and the illustrations are absolutely fantastic.  This is the perfect book for children between the ages of five and eight.  It reminds me of a modern day version of Miss Nelson is Missing (Miss Nelson, #1) by Harry Allard.  Even as an adult...

Book Review: Miss Nelson is Missing (Miss Nelson, #1) by Harry Allard

First published in 1977, Miss Nelson is Missing (Miss Nelson, #1) by Harry Allard is a fun, offbeat story about the students in Room 207 misbehaving once again. It's the worst class in the entire school, and the teacher just never shows up one day and instead get a new teacher named Miss Viola Swamp. While online shopping for books, I came across a book that was a blast from my past . . . Miss Nelson is Missing . I absolutely LOVED this book as a child, and I loved the short movie that was made out of it, which one of my elementary teachers let my class watch one day. I don't know of one kid from my generation that didn't love this book.  When I purchased this book for nostalgic reasons and of course to reread, I found out that there were other books featuring "Miss Nelson" that I never knew about. I definitely will go back and read those books as well. I was super interested to see if Miss Nelson is Missing stood the test of time, and I have to sa...

Book Review: Horseback Summer (Horse Crazy # 1) by Virginia Vail

Back in October, my local library system, which has 16 libraries throughout the county, had their semi-annual book sale where all proceeds help the library system. I was originally supposed to be in Nashville for the weekend but had to cancel my plans at the last minute, so I decided to go to the library sale instead. Browsing through the books, I came across a book that I loved in middle school called Horseback Summer (Horse Crazy # 1) by Virginia Vail. I didn't even hesitate, I grabbed the book and bought it for old times sake. Now if I can only get my hands on the rest of the series! There was some drama in my neighborhood earlier this week and knowing that there might be some additional drama tonight, I decided I needed to read something that wouldn't be too dramatic or to difficult to read. It was a perfect time to read Horseback Summer (Horse Crazy # 1) . As I began, it was exactly as I remembered and brought back all those fuzzy wuzzy feelings of my childhood. ...
